Malcolm Turnbull: Welcome to the Cynet Cyber Security Conference.  I’m here in Pohnpei in Micronesia at the Pacific Islands Forum, in one of the most physically isolated places on earth yet connected to the world through the par of the internet and digital technology.  That technology is conquering, has conquered geography.

The global economy and our own depends on that technology, its reliability and security.  But to take advantage of the opportunities these new technologies and innovation bring we must ensure security is not just an afterthought or a second order priority.  It must be a core part of policy and technological development to both increase our own security at home and to provide the confidence necessary to the world to ensure Australia and Australian companies can be increasingly competitive in the global online economy.

My Government’s $230,000,000 National Cyber Security Strategy puts security at the forefront, not as a prohibitive force but as an enabler.  Its objectives are to keep Australians safe while promoting innovation, growth and prosperity.  We need to be a trusted place to do business and we want to encourage the development of capital markets for Australian innovation.

Our Cyber Security Growth Centre, co-chaired by Data 61’s Adrian Turner, will create the right environment for cyber security innovation to flourish and benefit everyone.  Australian companies are thriving.  Nuix, Bugcrowd, Quintessence and Strata Key are examples to be proud of and we want more to follow in their footsteps.

Cynet brings all this together.  Importantly Cynet recognises that neither Government nor business can succeed alone.  While business innovates and builds the necessary networks, Government must facilitate and expand its traditional roles.  We’re building a cyber smart nation through investment and education, removing barriers that stifle investment and creating Centres of Excellence.

We want to encourage you, our home grown Cyber Security Experts, to solve these cyber security challenges and we want to attract and build investment in the sector to drive innovative ideas and create cyber security products and services.

Thank you Robert Rodriguez and Cynet and Adrian Turner and Data 61 for bringing this important event to Australia.  I’m very confident it is another leap forward in building the Australian Cyber Security Community.
