Gabby Jarvis: Hi, I’m Gabby; I’m in Year 10 at Daramalan College.

My project looked at the effect mining from the Captains Flat mine had on the Molonglo River in chemical and biological factors and how it may not have improved over the 60-years since mining has stopped.

As a result of my research I found that very little improvements have been made since the study by Richard Norris in 1982, and there is a still a lot of damage from the mine.

I was inspired to do this project as the Molonglo River is a key part of Canberra life, ‘cause I think, we don’t have a beach, we have to go there for water activities. I wanted to see how humans affect the environment.

The difficulties I had in doing my project were understanding and implementing the methods as I learnt them and at a sufficient rate,

and balancing all my other work that I had at the time. In the future I see myself studying science and engineering in a more veterinary science or animal behaviour type role,

where I can help animals in their health and research better ways to overcome their health issues.

Miners and probably the whole community would benefit from my research at the river, as it shows how mining can affect the environment,

not only in a short term, but a long term.

Outside of school I like to play a lot of basketball, I’m in the rep side for that, and I also like to read and spend time with my friends and family and puppies.

[Image changes to show Gabby running along a dirt path]

In running, I enjoy the freedom of just being out there and enjoying the weather and the outside environment.

I love that science and engineering; there is always something more you can discover and something more you can learn. You can always find a solution to a possible problem.
