Stone Ke: Our project is titled The Polyphenol Inhibition of hIAPP Aggregation.

Our project is a fundamental investigation into the toxic aggregation of amyloids, which is tied directly to a multitude of diseases, such as, diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Irfan Hrelja: We used our EGCG, which is a green tea extract and we explored this and how it interacts with this amyloid aggregation and namely into how it correlated with Type 2 Diabetes.

Stone Ke: The project offers a little research insight into the more physical aspects of amyloid aggregation in comparison to preexisting research, which is larger scale and more biologically focused.

Irfan Hrelja: But it’s such a problem that affects so many people worldwide and can be really, you know, debilitating towards families and individual lives and everything.

Stone Ke: This research really caters to a huge number of people out there, so it’s very important. And moreover, I think, it would benefit the healthcare system, levels of government and, honestly, everyone.

Irfan Hrelja: Some of the other things that I enjoy doing are, obviously, listening to music, that really sort of goes everywhere with me.

I also like to spend a bit of time with friends and families. I also play the double bass,

but if I really had to pick something that’s my favourite thing to do, something that’s really close to me, would definitely be just soccer in general, just playing, watching, everything, it’s just something I’ve grown up with and I have no doubt that I’ll continue to take with me into the rest of my life.

Irfan Hrelja: In the future, I think, due to the progressive nature of today’s society, I believe that there will be lots of advancements in technology. Due to all of these advancements there’ll be research in fields that don’t even exist at the moment.

Stone Ke: We honestly don’t know where it could go, but I see it as exponentially furthering, you know, faster and faster and just taking off, honestly, just unpredictably.

Irfan Hrelja: Who knows where it could be in 60, 70-years’ time, who knows?
