Narrator: Was there anything, I ask, she felt she didn’t get to achieve or see in her time on the ship?

She looks a little furtive for a moment,

then confesses she’d always harboured a desire for a close encounter with the legendary Kraken, or giant squid.

‘I didn’t want it to sink us!’ she says reassuringly,

‘but perhaps for just a tentacle to appear out of the deep and touch the deck and disappear again.’ I wonder how many of her colleagues share the fantasy.
