Dr Paulo de Souza is a physicist and miniaturisation expert, recognised internationally in field robotics, geochemistry and environmental engineering.

He is a collaborating scientist on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission, which landed and operates two large robots, Spirit and Opportunity, on the surface of Mars.

Current activities

Dr de Souza is an Office of the Chief Executive Science (OCE) Science Leader.

As an OCE Science Leader at CSIRO, he has been developing sub-millimeter sensors and a rigorous theoretical background for analysis of the data they collect, as well as exploring environmental applications of this cutting-edge technology.

Background

Paulo's passion for interdisciplinary research has enabled him to work in Applied Physics and Computing and to expand his research activities into characterisation of materials, instrumentation, interpretation of phenomena with existing and new methods, robotics and development of industrial processes.

His research contributions are based on:

  • original, challenging research, particularly in environmental sciences
  • contribution to and outstanding relationship with industry
  • as an exceptional science communicator.

As an OCE Science Leader at CSIRO, he has been developing sub-millimeter sensors, developing a rigorous theoretical background for analysis their data and exploring environmental applications of this cutting-edge technology.

Between 2008 and 2012 he worked at CSIRO as a scientist and led important research programs such as the ICT Lab in Tasmania and the Sensors & Sensor Networks TCP.

Dr de Souza has more than a decade of continued collaboration with NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover program.

He has more than 17 years of international experience in industrial research.

Achievements

Dr de Souza has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers in technical journals and conference proceedings, with more than 2 800 lifetime citations recorded by Web of Sciences.

He holds two patents and authored the book Innovation in Industrial Research with CSIRO Publishing.

Dr de Souza has received a number prestigious awards, including:

  • Two NASA Achievements Awards for his contribution to the extremely successful Mars Exploration Project
  • Order of the Merit (OM, Brazil) for his inspiring work as a scientist
  • Aula Magna Lecture in 2004 at his Alma Mater (UFES)
  • Willy Korf Award for Young Excellence, American Metals and Markets, World Steel Dynamics and Willy Korf Foundation (London)
  • Lórand Eötwös Award, Lórand Eötwös University - received at the Hungary Academy of Science.

He co-authored a series of papers reporting the discovery of geochemical evidences of wet environments in the Martian past using data from sensors onboard Spirit and Opportunity rovers. Science Magazine named these papers as The Breakthrough of the Year in 2004.
