Smartphone apps to support weight loss maintenance

We are looking to assess different methods of weight loss maintenance delivered through a Smartphone application.

  • 10 July 2014 | Updated 4 September 2014

In recent years, weight gain and obesity have been identified as an increasing global issue.

Although many people are successful at losing weight, only 1 in 5 manage to maintain their weight losses, and innovative ways are needed to assist individuals to maintain their weight.

There are various behaviours that may be linked to successful weight loss maintenance.

The objective of this study is to assess different methods of weight loss maintenance delivered through a Smartphone application.

In addition, we are investigating how diet affects psychological wellbeing including stress, depression, and mood, as well as various features, design and acceptance of Smartphone apps.

If you are in Adelaide, over 18, own a Smartphone and have lost weight recently, we would like your help.

If you are aged over 18, have recently lost at least 5 per cent of your body weight [external link] and want to continue maintaining your weight, have your own Smartphone and access to bathroom scales, and can attend 5 appointments at our clinic in Adelaide, we would like you to participate in our study.

The study will run for a total of 24 weeks.

During this time, you will be required to attend the CSIRO clinic on approximately the same time of day 4, 8, 12 and 24 weeks after your initial visit.

Your visit to the clinic will be approximately 45 minutes to an hour and involve having your weight taken and the completion of a survey.

There is no cost for installing the phone app but you will need to pay for your general network usage.

The average monthly data download is estimated to be no more than it would be with any other app.

If you are concerned about data usage, please let us know in the comments field of the registration form.

Teams from CSIRO Food and Nutrition Flagship and CSIRO Digital Productivity Flagship will be involved in this project which is jointly funded by Bupa Health Foundation.

To find out more or register your interest, please contact the CSIRO Clinical Research Unit on (08) 8303 8876 or email [email link].
