The Relationship Agreement between CSIRO and the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine will facilitate joint research in biosecurity and quarantine.

Strengthening scientific research links between Australia and China

An agreement between CSIRO and the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine (CAIQ) will facilitate joint research in biosecurity and quarantine between Australia and China.

With China now being one of Australia’s major trading partners, research links in biosecurity and quarantine have become increasingly important to both countries.

CSIRO and the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine (CAIQ) have a Relationship Agreement to facilitate research in these areas.

CAIQ is the research arm of General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) of the Peoples Republic of China.

The Agreement recognises the fact that both organisations have expertise in a broad range of advanced technologies and capabilities, and so can help each other.

History of collaboration

CAIQ has a long history of collaboration with CSIRO Entomology through the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service and the Relationship Agreement builds on this to develop a broader collaboration between CSIRO and CAIQ.

From the late 1980s, more than 20 senior staff from CAIQ and its parent organisation trained at CSIRO Entomology in the areas of:

  • risk analysis
  • identification of insect pests and nematodes
  • the technology of quarantine treatment.

A broad ranging agreement

The Agreement will facilitate cooperation between CAIQ and CSIRO in areas such as:

  • joint research projects
  • establishment of joint laboratories
  • exchange and training of scientific staff
  • joint seminars and symposia
  • bilateral talks.
Australia and China share many research interests, particularly around biosecurity and quarantine.

Areas of research under consideration for collaboration include:

  • plant and animal quarantine
  • human health
  • food safety
  • industrial product inspection technology
  • quarantine treatment
  • quick diagnostic technology
  • risk analysis
  • novel technologies
  • technology and equipment for replacement of methyl bromide.
