FIRST EVER CSIRO MANUfesto LAUNCHED


A new antenna that can communicate with up to 20 satellites at once, new X-ray technology to aid tumour detection, and revolutionary contact lenses that can be worn for up to a month, will be unveiled today in Melbourne at MANUfesto, CSIRO's expo of technology.

"CSIRO technologies provide real, practical solutions, which attract investment, create employment and win exports," says CSIRO deputy chief executive Dr Bob Frater, "it is Australia's science and technology which underpins our future. And CSIRO is a significant player."

The expo - to become an annual event - is a CSIRO initiative, co-sponsored by Business Victoria. It involves seminars, workshops and an exhibition of 60 examples of the latest CSIRO science. MANUfesto will be officially opened today by Victorian science and industry minister the Hon Mark Birrell. The Federal Minister for Science and Technology, the Hon Peter McGauran, will give the keynote address.

CSIRO technologies at MANUfesto operate in the automotive, food, environmental management, telecommunications, chemical, aerospace, and healthcare industries among many others. Highlights include:

Also launched at MANUFesto will be the latest issue of RESEARCH RESULTS, the journal which keeps decisionmakers in industry and Government abreast of all CSIRO's latest technological developments.
