CSIRO CORPORATE MEDIA RELEASE 95/50

22 May 1995

CSIRO HOSTS LEADING WORLD PLANT SCIENTISTS
Italian - Australian Scientific Collaboration

Scientific leaders unite - CSIRO Plant Industry will today (MONDAY) play host to discussions by leading world scientists on the latest in plant research.

"The event, organised by the CSIRO Plant Industry, is part of the 1995 Italy-Australia Science Weeks, which aim to develop a partnership between the industrial and scientific circles of the two countries," said Dr TJ Higgins, CSIRO Plant Industry scientist.

"Italian and Australian scientists will participate in the seminar 'Agricultural Biotechnology and Production' to share expertise and discuss future scientific research directions.

"Speakers will discuss many aspects of their work in areas such as stresses on the environment, genetic engineering and genetic resources and plant improvement," he said. "We have more than 30 scientists from both nations participating, so the topics covered will be far reaching.

"A number of prestigious speakers are involved, including Dr Greg Lawrence, who will talk about his world-first breakthrough on rust resistance genes in flax; Dr Manny Delhaize, discussing how plants survive against the potentially lethal effects of aluminium released by acid soils; and, of course, a range of topics to be covered by our acclaimed Italian visitors," he said.

The 1995 Italy-Australia Scientific Weeks are part of a program celebrating Guglielmo Marconi's invention of the radio in 1895.

This event has been sponsored by the Italian Embassy in Canberra and will involve scientists from CSIRO, ANU and The Plant Science Cooperative Research Centre.

The event will take place from 9am on Monday 22 August, at CSIRO Plant Industry, Black Mountain, corner of Clunies Ross Street and Barry Drive, Canberra. At 10.30am all media are invited to morning tea and an opportunity to meet the leading Italian and Australian scientists participating in the seminar.
