CSIRO CORPORATE MEDIA RELEASE 95/55

1 June 1995

BIG BONUS FOR BIRDWING BUTTERFLY

A donation of $5000 dollars to the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly project will further research into this rare and beautiful butterfly.

The money has been donated by Brisbane radio station 4BH and will be used to make penetrometers for the Butterfly research.

The penetrometers measure the toughness of the leaves of the vine and so will be used by the school students to gather valuable data for the project.

Spokesperson for the project, CSIRO's Dr Don Sands, said the penetrometers are needed to increase the knowledge and understanding of the relationship between the Richmond Birdwing butterfly and its food plant.

"About 120 schools are involved in this project with the CSIRO's Double Helix Science Clug growing the Aristolochia praevenosa - or Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine," Don Sands said.

"The Richmond Birdwing can only feed on this vine and the butterfly larvae can only feed on leaves that are a certain toughness.

The $5000 cheque will be presented by 4BH to Dr Don Sands at 10 am on 5 June at 1995 at Southbank in front of Butterfly Island.
