CSIRO CORPORATE MEDIA RELEASE 95/63

26 June 1995

NO EXTRATERRESTRIAL SIGNALS DETECTED

Today's [Monday 26 June] Herald Sun and Daily Telegraph-Mirror carried stories stating that:

'Scientists have detected mysterious microwave signals in outer space which they say may have been sent by intelligent life-forms from distant planets.

But they have lost their race against time to identify the transmissions.'

This is incorrect.

The six-month project to search for extraterrestrial signals finished 6 June this year. The search has so far found no signals of extraterrestrial origin and no signals have been left unexplained.

All candidate signals were investigated and shown to be of terrestrial origin , that is due to radio interference from satellites. The searchers used techniques that allowed them determinewith certainty that a signal was of terrestrial origin, even without knowing exactly which source (satellite etc) was producing it.
