The Chairman of CSIRO, Professor Adrienne Clarke AO, said today that the Board of CSIRO was delighted to have secured the services of Dr Malcolm McIntosh as Chief Executive of CSIRO.
Professor Clarke said that Dr McIntosh had been selected by the Board from an outstanding field of candidates, drawn from both within CSIRO and internationally. Fourteen short listed candidates were interviewed in Melbourne, London and New York.
"Dr McIntosh is a very experienced and able scientist and we welcome his return to Australia. He has the scientific, commercial, managerial and international skills that are needed for CSIRO to fulfil its mission to serve Australia by being the world's most effective multidisciplinary research organisation" she said.
Professor Clarke said that the Board was also delighted that Dr Roy Green had accepted the appointment as Chief Executive pending Dr McIntosh taking up duties early in 1996.
"Dr Green has provided very able and strong leadership as acting Chief Executive since March this year. He and Dr McIntosh will work closely with the Board to define future directions of CSIRO" she said.
Professor Clarke said that "science and technology are driving our future and CSIRO is a key part of Australia's future competitiveness; we absolutely depend on a strong science and technology capability not only for our industrial development, but also for managing our environment and securing our place in the international community."
"To optimise the contribution of Australian science, it must be closely enmeshed in Australia's political, economic and social development."
"The Chief Executive of CSIRO plays a key role in making this happen and both Dr Green and Dr McIntosh have the skills needed to acquit this role" she said.
Professor Clarke is currently travelling in the Kimberleys with a group of visiting scientists.
