CSIRO CORPORATE MEDIA RELEASE 95/80

17 August 1995

THE LATEST IN CSIRO'S RURAL RESEARCH - ON SHOW AT AG-QUIP GUNNEDAH

CSIRO will present a showcase of research at this year's Ag-Quip Field Days (Gunnedah 22 - 24 August), with exhibits highlighting the latest in pest control, exotic diseases and improving pastures.

"Many CSIRO Divisions are participating in this year's event, with a wide range of research on show," said Ms Paula Fitzgerald, CSIRO. "There will be displays, representatives and information available from the Divisions of Entomology, Wool Technology, Animal Production, Wildlife and Ecology, Plant Industry and Animal Health.

"The Division of Entomology will display work on better pest management in cotton and pecan nuts, as well as methods for controlling Nodding thistle, St John's wort and Paterson's curse," she said. "New wool products will also be on show, including Sportswool, an innovative fabric with a drying effect to enhance the performance of sportspeople.

"Products relating to livestock supplements will be featured by CSIRO Animal Production, and a preview to a device currently under development which aims to increase and maintain adequate iodine levels in grazing sheep.

"The Division of Wildlife and Ecology will be on hand to explain the three R's for rabbit control - Remove, Rip and Re-rip.

"CSIRO Plant Industry will inform graziers of breakthroughs in the creation of bloat-safe pastures, and will demonstrate a new management tool to help fight cotton pests.

"The CSIRO exhibit will also provide farmers with advice on safeguarding against a number of diseases affecting rabbits, cattle, sheep and goats, and include the latest information on horse death, such as the incident which occurred in Brisbane last year.

"There will be experts on hand to answer any questions, with the tent providing a range of must-see information for the rural community," she said.
