03 September 1995

INNOVATION AND INFORMATION - CSIRO SHOWCASE AT AGSHOW

The latest in pest control, exotic diseases and improving pastures - CSIRO will present a variety of research at this year's AgShow in Toowoomba (5-7 September).

"Many CSIRO Divisions are participating in this year's event, with a range of research and information on show," said Ms Paula Fitzgerald, CSIRO. "There will be displays, representatives and information available from the Divisions of Entomology, Animal Health, Plant Industry, and Tropical Crops and Pastures.

"The Division of Entomology will display research on better pest management in cotton and pecan nuts, as well as methods for controlling Nodding Thistle, St John's Wort and Paterson's Curse. Also featured will be a display looking at viruses that infect heliothis caterpillars, and methods being developed to control these," she said.

"CSIRO Plant Industry will inform graziers of new breakthroughs in the creation of bloat-safe pastures, and will demonstrate a new management tool to help fight cotton pests. This free computer software package, entomoLOGIC, is a must for all cotton growers.

The Division of Tropical Crops and Pastures will show a variety of research, including the development of better pasture plants, computer simulation of plant growth under different conditions, and a wide range of food products from the Australian soybean and mungbean industry, said Ms Fitzgerald.

"CSIRO will also provide information on safeguarding against diseases of rabbits, cattle, sheep, goats and horses, including the latest information on horse virus disease, which occurred in Brisbane last year.

"A range of CSIRO publications and merchandise will be available, and there will be experts on hand to answer any questions, with the tent providing a range of must-see information for the rural community," she said.
