The latest in pest prevention, increasing rice and wheat yields and exotic disease control - CSIRO will present a variety of research at this year's Henty Machinery Field Days (19-22 September).
"Many CSIRO Divisions are participating in this year's event, with a range of research and information on show," said Ms Paula Fitzgerald, CSIRO. "There will be displays, representatives and information available from the Divisions of Entomology, Plant Industry, Wildlife and Ecology, Animal Health and Soils.
"The Division of Entomology will present a wide range of research, covering the redlegged earth mite, spotted clover aphid, eucalypts on farms, earthworms and a new biopesticide being developed for use against locusts and grasshoppers," she said.
"CSIRO Plant Industry will be demonstrating packages to assist ricegrowers and wheatgrowers in making important decisions about applying nitrogen fertiliser. Also featured will be new work on the effects of nitrogen being lost through the soil, and the delicate relationship between nitrogen and water.
"Researchers from the Division of Wildlife and Ecology will be on hand to explain the three R's for rabbit control - Remove, Rip and Re-rip - as well as the latest in mouse research.
"The CSIRO exhibit will also present the latest information on safeguarding against a number of diseases affecting rabbits, cattle, sheep, goats and horses.
"The Division of Soils will display its new methods for land resource assessment using new technology, sampling and analysis techniques," she said. "This will allow for generation of better soil maps, and will assist farmers and landcare groups in soil conservation.
"There will be experts on hand to answer any questions, with the tent providing a range of must-see information for the rural community," she said.
