SEWEB: THE SOFTWARE ENGINEERING ONLINE EXTENSION SERVICE


Software engineers will welcome new networking possibilities which make use of the Internet, according to CSIRO's Dr John O'Callaghan.

Mr Rob Durie, Deputy Executive Director of the Australian Information Industries Association, today (Wednesday) launched the pilot SEweb online service for the software engineering community. The Association is holding its 1995 annual conference at the Regent Hotel in Melbourne.

SEweb uses the Internet's World Wide Web system to support software engineering practitioners in Australia. It will provide a focal point for software engineering resources and activities, assist individuals and organisations share information, and foster industry collaboration.

Mr Durie stressed Australia's strong performance as a developer of successful information technology products. "The AIIA believes that SEweb will help companies to strive towards world's best practice in software development and enhance Australia's competitive position."

He also noted the importance of collaboration if Australian industry is to provide the critical mass of expertise and size that is often required for major software development work.

The pilot service is being managed by CSIRO with funding from the Department of Industry, Science and Technology. Dr O'Callaghan, Chief of CSIRO's Division of Information Technology, thanked DIST for the strong support it had given to the SEweb pilot. He made particular mention of the high quality advice and technical content contributed by internationally recognised software engineering experts in Australian universities and research organisations.

Companies are invited to use the pilot service and to become involved with its ongoing development, so as to ensure that it fully meets industry needs.
