CSIRO MEDIA RELEASE 95/109

17 October 1995

CSIRO RELEASES A NEW COTTON MANAGEMENT TOOL -
IMPROVING CROP PRODUCTION AND SUSTAINABILITY

CSIRO Plant Industry will today (Tuesday, 17 October) release the 1995 version of entomoLOGIC, a management tool to assist the cotton industry with crop management.

"As insecticide resistance increases, pest management decisions are becoming increasingly important," said Lance McKewen, CSIRO Plant Industry scientist. "entomoLOGIC helps users implement sustainable insect management practices, particularly the two larvae per metre threshold and the resistance management strategy.

"The prediction of insect development and survival, included in entomoLOGIC, helps growers target insect sprays better and reduces selection for resistance. entomoLOGIC is valuable not only as a management tool, but also as a record keeping system for all agronomic data," he said. "It assists users with farming decisions, particularly for insect pest management."

The package allows growers and consultants to enter data on insect pressures, crop inputs, pesticide applications and field operations, providing graphs and status reports, said Mr McKewen. entomoLOGIC also contains a costing system which allows users to enter data on dollars spent on each field operation or chemical application.

"The new version will be launched at workshops in ten cotton-growing regions in New South Wales and Queensland, over the coming three weeks.

"All participants from the cotton industry attending the workshops will be provided with a free copy of entomoLOGIC," he said.

entomoLOGIC is sponsored by cotton growers through the Cotton Research and Development Corporation.
