CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Roy Green today (Tuesday) congratulated CSIRO's Corporate Human Resources Group, which was awarded the Public Service Commission1995 Equality Award at a ceremony at Canberra's Hyatt Hotel.
The Equality Award was presented to CSIRO by the Hon. Gary Johns, Minister for Public Service Matters, for the video "Getting Somewhere" and a package of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recruitment and training programs. The award was accepted by HR Services Manager Mr Gary Knobel, and Ms Delia Muller of CSIRO's Townsville laboratories, who played a leading part in the making of the video.
"Our aim in initiating an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment plan is not just the creation of more jobs in CSIRO," said Dr Green. "We are increasing access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to permanent full-time employment within the organisation, and improving our links with indigenous communities.
"A major component of our EEO strategy is to demonstrate that a career in science can involve many and various opportunities. CSIRO offers research and support positions, in areas as diverse as wildlife, agriculture, mining, manufacturing and computer technology.
"The video 'Getting Somewhere' graphically illustrates the excitement of young people working in Australia's science community" said Dr Green.
As well as the video, the award-winning CSIRO EEO program includes the publication What is Fair? What is Not?, and a range of flexible working arrangements to allow employees to manage work and family commitments.
