CSIRO MEDIA ALERT 95/121

1 November 1995

ENERGY - THE BURNING ISSUE

At the Energy and Clean Air Conference, Professor Bob Sawyer, from the University of California, and Dr Robin Segal, a Washington consultant, will join Australian specialists to debate current and future energy options.

The Conference provides a scientific forum for issues such as alternative motor vehicle fuels, traffic control strategies and will provide a range of views on greenhouse gas emissions.

Alternative energy production options, such as cogeneration and geothermal power stations, will be canvassed. Greenhouse gas effects on climate such as global warming and potential effects on health and agriculture will also be discussed.

CSIRO speakers will outline strategies for reducing emissions from power generation and for control of nitrogen oxide, which produces ozone, a respiratory irritant. As well, the technical results and assessed economic impacts from the International Energy Agency Greenhouse Gas Program will be presented

Other speakers include representatives from the gas industry, the coal fired power stations, consultants, and government organisations.

Pam Allan, the New South Wales Minister for the Environment will officially open the Conference.

The two day Conference will be held at the Lehany Theatre, CSIRO Division of Applied Physics at Lindfield, Sydney on 2-3 November 1995.

The Conference is jointly organised by the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand, the region's pre-eminent professional air quality association, and the CSIRO Centre for Pollution Assessment and Control.
