CSIRO MEDIA RELEASE 95/124

HIGH ACHIEVERS DO IT IN TEAMS

A novel learning program for researchers and business people will be launched in early December.

According to CSIRO's Dr Stella Humphries, the unique program will give research and technical leaders from universities and the private and public research sectors in Australia improved skills in the human relations aspects of project management.

The course Achievement Through Teams: Leadership in R&D will consist of four modules, running from December 1995 to July 1996.

"We are aiming to explore and develop practical leadership skills, and a deeper understanding of the human dynamics which play such a critical role in the work environment," said Dr Humphries, who took a major part in developing the program.

"The program brings together the skills and also the particular needs of scientific and technological leaders, business managers, and departmental officials," said Dr Humphries. "Project teams today have very little margin; they are expected to perform productively at top level at all times. There's enormous pressure on the technical community to achieve quickly, efficiently, and within budget."

According to Dr Humphries, the course modules will focus on self management and leadership, team building, organisational cultures, and innovation.

"The Business/Higher Education Round Table asked CSIRO and its partners to design the program in a genuine attempt to add to Australia's prosperity and well-being," said Dr Humphries. "Leadership skills and attributes, which motivate others in a common purpose, have become an essential complement to technical expertise."

The program was developed by CSIRO, BHP, F.H. Faulding & Co. and the University of Melbourne, under the sponsorship of the Business/Higher Education Round Table.
