CSIRO MEDIA RELEASE 95/125

10 November 1995

HEARD THE LATEST RESEARCH 'FURPHY'?
- $30K PRIZE TO AUSTRALIAN PIONEERS

Mr Andrew Furphy, Director of J. Furphy and Sons, today announced that CSIRO and his Company will galvanise a research and development program aimed at producing internationally competitive industrial kettles.

The kettles, or baths, are used in the galvanising process.

J. Furphy and Sons was awarded a $30,000 grant by the Editorial Board of the CSIRO publication, Research Results to further improve the company's industrial kettles for the international market.

"The developing economies of Asia will require galvanised products on a scale we haven't seen before and our company sees a strong and sustainable market for our kettles, if we have the best product at the right price," said Mr Andrew Furphy, Director of J. Furphy and Sons.

"Current Furphy industrial kettles are simple and effective. However, we have to remember the motto that appeared on Furphy water carts that quenched the thirst of our armies during the World Wars."

"Good, better, best, never let it rest, Till your good is better, And your better is best. Research and development with CSIRO is certainly the basis of achieving the best," Mr Furphy said.

Dr Allan Morton of CSIRO's Division of Materials Science and Technology said that the project will draw on the industrial experience and engineering skills of J. Furphy and Sons and the research and development of CSIRO to produce a galvanising kettle with significantly improved life.

PS: Many Australians still remember the water carts and their drivers during the World Wars, who not only brought water, but also information and scuttlebutt to the troops. 'Furphy' is now entrenched in our lexicon.
