CSIRO's $25,000 Chairman's Medal was today awarded to the team led by Dr Keith Murray of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory, which identified the equine horse virus in 1994.
Professor John de Laeter, CSIRO Board Member, presented the medal on behalf of CSIRO Chairman Professor Adrienne Clarke at a ceremony at the State Film Theatre in Melbourne, to Dr Murray and his team of seven (Dr Keith Murray, Dr Alex Hyatt, Dr Allan Gould, Dr Peter Hooper, Mr Paul Selleck, Dr Harvey Westbury and Dr Laurie Gleeson).
Professor de Laeter said, "the work done by the Australian Animal Health Laboratory has been recognised internationally for the speed, the accuracy, and the quality of the research." The Chairman's Medal, which is awarded annually, is a gold medal which also carries a cash prize of $25,000. The award is for the best CSIRO research in the previous year.
