CSIRO MEDIA RELEASE 95/133

30 November 1995

R&D CENTRE TO HELP INDUSTRY COMPETE

Today, CSIRO launched a revamped Refractories Centre Australia to give greater assistance to industry and suppliers.

By centralising refractory research and development in Melbourne, Mr Nigel Stone, Manager of the Centre, sees CSIRO providing a better service that will save time and money. It also gives companies access to CSIRO's network of R&D alliances, both internationally and within Australia.

"More efficient and productive R&D support for any industry is vital in this competitive age," said Mr Stone. "Fortunately there is an increasing awareness by industry of the need for better understanding of refractory materials to improve quality output and usage. We at the Centre can provide the R&D to improve that quality."

"Having talked with industry representatives around Australia, I've observed a continuing need for refractories' support in a range of sectors, such as primary and secondary processing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, petrochemical, waste incineration and heavy minerals," Stone said.

"Many companies using refractories for high-temperature and corrosive or erosive environments are interested in forming an alliance with the Refractories Centre Australia, often in conjunction with other research centres, such as universities or Co-operative Research Centres."

The Refractories Centre Australia researchers are trained to address any number of industrial problems, such as:

Stone said that the new centre will also have the capacity to address the needs of small to medium size enterprises that may often not have large resources to engage in medium to long-term R&D.

The Refractories Centre Australia has been established in new premises on the Clayton CSIRO site, where it can draw on a range of research expertise from several Divisions.
