CSIRO has welcomed the Government's announcement that the National Measurement Laboratory, located within the CSIRO Division of Applied Physics in Sydney, will be declared a National Facility.
Full details of the announcement, which forms part of the Innovation Statement package, will be released at the launch of a booklet on Australian Standards by the Minister for Small Business, Customs and Construction, Senator Chris Schacht on Wednesday 13 December, 1995 at 12.30pm, Parliament House, Canberra.
Based on the findings of the Committee of Inquiry into Australia's Standards and Conformance Infrastructure - the Kean Report, the Government's decision ensures a commitment that will see NML adequately funded.
"This will have tremendous impact on the work of the National Measurement Laboratory," said Chief Standards Scientist, Dr Barry Inglis.
"The decision shows the Government's recognition of the vital role NML plays in contributing to Australia's manufacturing and trade success, and its importance to the success of APEC.
"As a National Facility, NML will be able to develop a more effectivenational profile, and compete internationally in the development of new measurement techniques which will form the basis of future trade and manufacturing industries.
"The Government's action will also reinforce our activities in the Asia-Pacific region by enabling NML to continue supporting the development of regional measurement standards."
The National Measurement Laboratory functions to develop and maintain Australia's physical standards of measurement. It actively promotes the equivalence between Australia's measurement standards, and those of other countries. NML forms part of an international network which ensures that measurement is consistent worldwide.
