The Chief Executive of CSIRO, Dr Malcolm McIntosh, has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Science and Technology Mr Peter McGauran, that the former CSIRO Chief Executive Dr John Stocker has been appointed Chief Scientist for Australia.

"Dr Stocker's insight into science and industrial issues will be of great benefit in his new role and we look forward to a fruitful relationship in working with him," said Dr McIntosh.

Dr Stocker, a graduate of Melbourne University, became Director of pharmaceutical research with the Swiss company Hoffman La Roche. He returned to Australia to become founding Managing Director of AMRAD Corporation, a company established to commercialise Australian biomedical discoveries. He is now a principal of Foursight Associates, a company providing advisory services in research, development, science and technology.

Dr Stocker was appointed a member of the Prime Minister's Science Council in 1989, and was Chief Executive of CSIRO between 1990 and 1995.

In 1992 Dr Stocker was named The Australian newspaper's Australian of the Year.

Dr Stocker succeeds Professor Michael Pitman as Chief Scientist.
