Current activities

Dr Lisa Golding is a Research Scientist within the Contaminant Chemistry and Ecotoxicology Program, CSIRO Land and Water. Her research on aquatic ecotoxicology and chemistry is currently delivered through two flagships – Water for a Healthy Country and Wealth from Oceans. 

Dr Golding’s research has focused on the bioavailability and toxicity of contaminants on marine and freshwater algae, invertebrates and fish. She has also conducted biokinetic research to model the bioaccumulation and toxicity of metal from multiple exposure pathways. She has recently started researching the bioavailability and toxicity of emerging nanotechnologies to aquatic biota.
 
Research topics of special interest have included:

• Aquatic ecotoxicology
• Modelling metal bioaccumulation and toxicity
• Metal speciation using analytical and modelling approaches
• In situ technologies to link laboratory and field biological responses
• Community level responses to contaminants using mesocosms
• Guideline development and ecological risk assessment.

Background

In 2012, Lisa joined the Contaminant Chemistry and Ecotoxicology Program at CSIRO, Lucas Heights. During 2010-11, Lisa was a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for Aquatic Pollution Identification and Management (CAPIM), University of Melbourne where she used in situ cages to determine chronic effects of contaminants in urban streams. Prior to that, Lisa completed her PhD in Canada where she developed a model of dietary metal bioaccumulation and toxicity to use as a tool in ecological risk assessments.

For eight years she contributed to research on native species bioassay development for whole effluent toxicity testing (WETT), Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council and Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand (2000) water quality guidelines for metals, and was project leader for several effects assessment consulting jobs at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand.

Achievements

Dr Golding has been first author or co-author on 7 peer reviewed research papers in international journals, 27 technical reports and given 10 platform conference presentations. She has been a university guest lecturer and presented her research on science TV shows 'Scope' and 'Catalyst'. She has co-supervised a PhD  student and third year BSc student project.
