Dr John Ramshaw: development of biomedical materials and medical devices

Dr John Ramshaw’s research activities are biomedical material product development, based on natural biopolymers, including those from marine sources and those based on collagen.

Current activities

Dr John Ramshaw is a Chief Research Scientist. His research focuses on development of biomedical materials and medical devices. 

This includes work on novel adhesives, including those from marine sources, new materials for stem cell growth and proliferation, and development of new scaffold materials for tissue engineering, especially those based on proteins such as collagens and other extracellular matrix components.

Background

Dr Ramshaw joined CSIRO in 1980. 

Dr Ramshaw's research focuses on development of biomedical materials and medical devices.

Prior to this his postdoctoral study was at:

  • Department of Botany, Durham University, United Kingdom (UK)
  • Department of Biochemistry, Liverpool University, UK
  • School of Chemistry, University of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
  • Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, USA.

Since joining CSIRO, Dr Ramshaw has been involved in many protein chemistry activities, including:

  • collagen structure/function as part of the Leather Research Group
  • pilin structure/function as part of development of a vaccine against footrot in sheep
  • collagen structure/function studies for the development of biomedical materials and devices
  • many commercial interactions, including those in gelatine, food and medical device industries.

Academic qualifications

Dr Ramshaw has been awarded a:

  • Bachelor of Science with Honours from the Department of Chemistry, Durham University, UK, 1965-68
  • Doctor of Philosophy from the Department of Botany, Durham University, 1968-71
  • Doctor of Science also from the Durham University, 1992.

Achievements

Dr Ramshaw is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering.

He is also a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and has been internationally recognised by the award of Fellow, Biomaterials Science and Engineering. 

In 2005 Dr Ramshaw was part of the project team that won the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement for the development of the NovoSorb™ biodegradable polymer technology.

Other

Dr Ramshaw has held major research grants from Industry and from Government for his studies on biomaterials and their performance, and has been involved with a range of successful international collaborations.

Dr Ramshaw has acted as a consultant to a range of Australian and overseas companies and served on the Therapeutic Device Evaluation Committee Advisory Panel on Biomaterials. 

He is a member of several professional societies, including the Australian Society for Biomaterials of which he was the inaugural President. 

He served as the Australian delegate to the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science.
