Titanium powder with items made by additive manufacturing

Powder to product

CSIRO aims to stimulate an Australian titanium industry with applied research on production of feedstock products including titanium sheet and wire.

  • 1 May 2012

Successful development of an integrated Australian titanium manufacturing industry is not only dependent on uptake of advanced manufacturing technologies in Australia, but also on Australia having a local industry capable of supplying feedstocks for advanced manufacturing.

CSIRO is pursuing applied research into new ways of manufacturing feedstocks like titanium sheet and wire from metal powder product.

In general, metal powder is suited to downstream applications such as:

  • hot isostatic pressing
  • metal injection molding
  • cold spray
  • sheet manufacture by consolidation
  • additive manufacturing.

Technology for producing thin titanium sheet

Light Metals Flagship researchers are developing technology to produce continuous titanium sheets from titanium powder. This technology has the potential to expand titanium use into domestic and industrial products.
