One of Australia’s leading nutritionists is urging Australians to think about their hearts in a different way this Valentine’s Day – keeping them healthy with the CSIRO Healthy Heart Program.

The team that produced the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet books recently developed The CSIRO Healthy Heart Program as a complete eating and exercise plan designed to reduce the growing problem of cardiovascular and related diseases such as diabetes.

“Valentines Day is a great day to begin looking after your heart as well as your sweetheart,” says co-author, Dr Peter Clifton from CSIRO’s Preventative Health National Research Flagship.

“The CSIRO Healthy Heart Program looks at the top-10 foods for heart health as well as 10 warning signs to keep in mind. These include not only your cholesterol level, but also your waist measurement, sleeping pattern, fitness and mental health.

“Valentines Day is a great day to begin looking after your heart as well as your sweetheart,”
says co-author, Dr Peter Clifton from CSIRO’s Preventative Health National Research Flagship.

“The Program aims to win you over to a healthy lifestyle with a 12-week eating and exercise plan and delicious recipes to get you started,” Dr Clifton says. “Start it today with someone you love.”

Cardiovascular disease kills about one Australian every 10 minutes and prevents 1.4 million people from living a full life because of disability caused by the disease.

“In most cases these tragedies can be prevented simply by modifying eating habits and lifestyle choices,” Dr Clifton says.

“Many of us know we could be a lot healthier but want to be motivated to do something about it. The CSIRO Healthy Heart Program can get you excited about giving yourself a better chance to be healthy and stay healthy over the long-haul,” he says.

National Research Flagships

CSIRO initiated the National Research Flagships to provide science-based solutions in response to Australia’s major research challenges and opportunities. The nine Flagships form multidisciplinary teams with industry and the research community to deliver impact and benefits for Australia.
