Australian National Algae Culture Collection
Biodiversity research
The Australian National Algae Culture Collection (ANACC) is one of the CSIRO’s National Biological Collections, which contribute to the goal of providing practical, science-based solutions to halt biodiversity decline in Australia.
In this context, the algae collection is a resource for research on algal diversity, distribution, richness and taxonomic relationships, including those of economic importance and environmental concern.
It supports information sharing for research, community benefit, policy development and conservation, and is part of the Australian Microbial Resources Information Network, AMRiN [external link], which is involved in a new initiative Networking Australian Collections of Microorganisms within the NCRIS Atlas of Living Australia [external link].

Microalgae are responsible for at least half of global primary productivity, converting solar energy to organic energy and fixing carbon dioxide in the process. This phytoplankton is from Tasmania's Derwent estuary.
