In September 2004, two publications from CSIRO's Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC) were awarded Whitley medals.
The Whitley awards are the premier awards for zoological publication in Australia, recognising excellence in zoological publications (in printed or electronic form) containing significant information relating to Australian fauna, science and conservation.
The Whitley award for Freshwater text was given to Dr Nils Andersen and Mr Tom Weir for their book Australian water bugs: their biology and identification.
The Whitley award for Evolutionary text was awarded to Dr Bernard Crespi, Dr David Morris and Dr Laurence Mound for their book Evolution of ecological and behavioural diversity: Australian Acacia thrips as model organisms.
The awards are named after Mr Gilbert Whitley (1903-75), the eminent Australian ichthyologist who worked at the Australian Museum in Sydney, New South Wales, for 42 years.
