Three MRI slice images and one three dimensional image of a brain.

The MILXview interface allows cortical thickness to be estimated automatically from an MRI scan.

Rapid visualisation and analysis of medical imaging

CSIRO has developed platform-independent software that improves visualization of medical data, automates image analysis and aids in interpretation of medical images.

CSIRO’s experts in biomedical imaging at the Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC) are giving clinicians access to simple software tools that supplement their examination of medical images, such as MRI and PET scans, with quantitative measurements that are difficult or impossible to obtain manually.

The problem

Rapid, accurate interpretation of medical imaging aids in early diagnosis of injury and disease. However, the visualization and interpretation of the data produced by imaging machines is a challenging process that is difficult to fully automate.

Our solution

Researchers at the AEHRC have gathered together many of CSIRO’s medical imaging algorithms into the cross-platform medical imaging library, MILX™.

MILXview allows rapid, accurate interpretation of medical imaging.

MILX™ means researchers can quickly and easily use the existing code base to develop new algorithms in a rigorous, testable software environment.

A core tool of MILX™ is MILXview which allows analysis and visualisation of medical images in three dimensions.

The features of MILXview are:

  • three-dimensional (3D) visualisation of medical image data driven by detailed analytics
  • automated analysis and manipulation of images
  • tailored plug-ins add versatility and aid collaboration
  • intuitive, customisable interface
  • platform-independent
  • handles imaging requirements from multimodality neuroimaging and musculoskeletal imaging to prostate radiotherapy and small animal imaging
  • import and export in two-dimensional (2D) or 3D in all major formats.

Achievements

This work won the e-health category of the 2010 Queensland iAwards.
