The fire spread meter for northern Australia has been designed to predict the rate of spread of fires in open grassland, woodland, and open forest with a grassy understorey.
This meter is not suitable for predicting fire spread in tall, closed forest or tall forest with a substantial shrub and litter component in the understorey.
It is designed to predict fire spread where the grassy fuels are largely undisturbed or grazed only lightly.
