Techfest 2010: Modelling Complex Systems

Storm clouds over the Gippsland Lakes, Victoria.
Techfest '10 will be held on 25-26 March 2010 with the conference addressing 'Modelling Complex Systems'.

Times and places

Models are common in all branches of science. They are used to explain and/or predict the behavour of a (complex) system.

The methods used to create models can vary enormously, and so can their outputs. Hence, it is important to understand their similarities and their differences.

CSIRO's Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics Division invites scientists with an interest in modelling to Techfest '10 which will be held at the CSIRO's Marine Laboratories on the 25th and 26th March 2010.

It is envisaged that the areas of model application will be varied, but topics may include:

  • empirical versus process based models (and hybrids)
  • model simplicity versus complexity and negotiating where in the spectrum a given model sits
  • data requirements to fulfil desired model aims
  • model flexibility
  • sensitivity of model outputs to both parameters values and state variables
  • error (arising from both data measurement and model structure)
  • uncertainty (from the interplay between sensitivity and error).

Techfest '10 is the sixth of a highly successful series of annual workshops that provide an opportunity for researchers with an interest in the mathematical sciences to network and share ideas.
