CSIRO MEDIA RELEASE 96/72
25 August 1996
BUSH TUCKER SPECIAL IN RURAL RESEARCH SPRING ISSUE
The bush food industry expects to increase in value from $14 million to $100 million in the next three years. Rural Research looks at some of the likely prospects for the industry's expansion, like the quandong (or native peach), the desert lime, and the lemon myrtle, and how CSIRO research is contributing to their development
Other stories in the Spring Rural Research include:
- Mapping Australian pastures - a detailed survey of our pastures and the use of satellite images to map potential pasture zones revealed some surprising results. More information: Dr Michael Hill 09-387 0200
- A recent study of trees for south-eastern Australia - combined with information about how Australian trees perform in different environments all over the world is helping Australian farmers select the best species for their particular environment. More information: Tim Vercoe 06-281 8211
- Health concerns for aquaculture - Australia's expanding aquaculture industry has a competitive advantage - it is free of most major diseases that affect the industry in other countries. But this freedom can't be taken for granted. More information: Dr Mark Crane 0562-27 5000.
All this and more in the Spring edition of Rural Research.
