MEDIA ALERTS: VACCINES, DISEASE, SALMON - TWO IMPORTANT LECTURES

1. Global immunisation and disease eradication - a 21st century challenge

Australian children are at greater risk from whooping cough as our national vaccination rate drops. This disgraceful situation contrasts with international efforts to refocus on disease eradication through global immunisation programs.

Sir Gus Nossal deals with these issues and presents a preferred future for disease eradication in the 21st century at a public lecture at the Sunderland Theatre, Melbourne University on Wednesday 9 October 1996.

The lecture is presented by the Cooperative Research Centre for Vaccine Technology.

2 Disease - a threat to our salmon farms, trade and our rivers - an American perspective

Diseases are one of the primary obstacles to improved productivity in salmon and trout farming with a direct effect of 10% on production costs and indirect effects of over 25%. Whirling disease has also devastated wild salmon and trout in some US rivers.

Professor Ronald P Hedrick, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California will discuss salmonid diseases - their impact on aquaculture, quarantine and trade on Thursday, 10 October 1996 at AAHL, Geelong.

Professor Hedrick plays a significant role in fish health policy issues in the USA. He will speak about the movement of diseases between wild and captive salmonid populations, the dangers this presents to aquaculture, trade and quarantine issues related to fish health and salmonids.

His lecture offers a unique opportunity to be briefed on the facts behind the current controversy over Canadian salmon imports.
