2. Why am I not receiving Science by Email when I joined the list?
Science by Email goes out to readers every Friday, except on Good Friday and over Christmas.
If the newsletter has not come through after several Fridays have passed, there could be a filter set up at your end which is deleting the messages or placing them in a folder without you noticing them. Please check if there are any filters set up on your email program that could be causing problems.
Your Internet Service Provider may have SPAM-blocking software mistaking Science by Email for SPAM. Check with your Internet service provider to see if they are blocking Science by Email.
If the newsletter just mysteriously stops arriving in your in-box one day, there are a few possible reasons. One is that your SPAM filter is picking up Science by Email as SPAM. Please check your settings.
3. Why does the email have lots of funny symbols in it? It doesn't make sense.
If this is the case, the problem might be that the HTML formatting in the email is being converted to plain text when it reaches you.
HTML is the programming language used in web pages. We use it in Science by Email so the newsletter can contain images, coloured text and other formatting. The URLs you see at the top are for image files, which should appear as part of the heading of the newsletter. The cause may be the mail server or the email program itself.
Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do from this end to stop this from happening. But, we do have a plain text version of Science by Email. This has no HTML formatting, so it should work fine on your computer.
If you cannot see the pictures, there could be a number of reason:
You need to be connected to the Internet when looking at the newsletter. Check to see you're online.
Or
Sometimes people's servers do not show the HTML version. You can always change to plain text version if the HTML is a problem. You can also see the newsletter in HTML online each week.
Or
The security settings on your mailing program could be preventing images from being downloaded. If you're not confident in changing your security settings, try adding ‘sciencebyemailhtml-bounces@lists.csiro.au' to your contacts list.
