Try this: Tin can telephone

You will need

  • 2 metal tin cans. Make sure they are cleaned out and have no sharp edges.
  • Hammer.
  • 2 Nails
  • String (several metres)
  • Another person
  • An adult

OR

  • 2 Plastic cups
  • String (several metres)
  • Another person
  • An adult

If you can, use the tin cans instead of the plastic cups. They work much better.

What to do

If you are using cans

  1. Use the hammer and a nail to punch a hole in the bottom of each can. Ask an adult to help you with this bit.
  2. Thread the string through the holes and tie a nail to each end of the string, so that when you pull the cans apart, the tension on the string pulls the nails inside the cans.

If you are using plastic cups.

  1. Make two holes in the bottom of each cup. You may need to ask an adult to help you with this bit.
  2. Use the holes to tie the each end of the string to a cup.

To use your tin-can telephone

  1. Each person should take one can.
  2. Walk apart from each other until the string is tight. Make sure the string isn't touching anything else.
  3. Talk into your can while the other person holds their can up to one ear. Don't shout, just talk in a normal voice.
  4. Take turns talking to each other. Keep the string taunt or you will not be able to hear each other.
