This video looks at the work of the Water for a Healthy Country Flagship Irrigation Team, the winners of one of the three CSIRO Medals for Research Achievement awarded in 2007. (2:37)
A 2007 CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement was awarded to the Water for a Healthy Country Flagship Irrigation Team, for research that has advanced the sustainable management of Australia’s water resources, specifically within the irrigation sector.
The underlying principles developed by the team are now being applied to a ‘whole-of-Basin’ water yield assessment of the Murray-Darling Basin and a district-by-district analysis of irrigation water systems across the whole Murray region.
At the international level, this work has led to multilevel government policy dialogue and has changed irrigation practice in:
- the Yellow River Basin
- China
- the Indus River Basin, in Pakistan.
This video was used to introduce the team at the 2007 CSIRO Medals ceremony.
It includes:
- the importance of irrigation in Australia
- the team’s analysis of water flows in Murimbidgee river catchment
- how the work is being applied to Australian irrigation.
