As an Australian Government science agency, CSIRO receives funding through the Australian Government Budget.
The Australian Government Budget for 2007-08 was announced by the Treasurer, The Hon. Peter Costello MP, on the evening of Tuesday 8 May 2007. It included details of the Government's funding of CSIRO through the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).
The budget incorporates the largest funding allocation to CSIRO in its history with total government funding to the nation’s premier science agency over the next four years set to exceed A$2.8 billion. This is an increase of 19.5 per cent over the previous four years. In addition to baseline funding of A$2.558 billion CSIRO’s successful National Research Flagships program will be expanded by A$174 million to increase the organisation’s research effort in clean energy, climate adaptation, niche manufacturing and minerals exploration; A$51.7 million will be provided to develop Pathfinder, a next generation radio telescope that will assist Australia maintain its world class standing in astronomy; A$16.8 million for the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) National Facility to increase protection against the incursion of exotic diseases such as avian influenza; and A$2m for the development of a wellbeing plan for children’s health.
