CSIRO at Australia’s biggest ICT trade show – CeBIT

Reference: 10/67

Technology to deliver high value business services, aid medical diagnosis and bring broadband Internet to rural and remote areas are among the CSIRO innovations on show at Australia’s biggest information and communication technology (ICT) event next week.

  • 18 May 2010

CeBIT, the nation’s leading trade show for ICT industries and research organisations, is on in Sydney from 24-26 May.

The CSIRO stand, staffed by experts in science, engineering and commercialisation, will feature displays of the following technology:

  • augmented reality visualisation to enable remote delivery of complicated expert services in healthcare, education and controlling equipment over distance
  • self-learning computer vision that identifies expressions and analyses behaviour to aid in the diagnosis of medical conditions and make telecollaboration more natural
  • wireless local access and wireless backhaul for providing broadband Internet connectivity at data rates similar to fibre
  • a web-based smart metering system that lets householders and small businesses manage their energy use and cut costs
  • image enhancement and automated dose calculation to allow better targeting of radiotherapy and improve treatment of prostate cancer
  • one of the first supercomputers to combine central processing units (CPUs) with graphics processing units (GPUs) and run applications up to 100 times faster.

CeBIT has a special focus on e-health this year and has devoted an entire hall of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre to the topic. Here the Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC, a joint venture between CSIRO and Queensland Health) has a stand.

Among the more than 120 local and international guests speaking during the three-day event are CSIRO’s Group Executive for Information Sciences, Dr Alex Zelinsky, and the new Director of CSIRO’s ICT Centre, Dr Ian Oppermann.

CSIRO has been involved in CeBIT Australia since its inception in 2002 and is a foundation member of their Future Parc section.
