An international recognised expert in medical imaging, Dr Simon K. Warfield, has been awarded an Australia-Harvard Fellowship to travel to Australia to work closely with the biomedical imaging team at the Australian e-Health Research Centre on early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.

  • 8 May 2008

"The Australia-Harvard Fellowship offers me the opportunity to establish closer links with key Alzheimer's disease researchers in Australia," said Dr Warfield, Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and Director, Computational Radiology Laboratory at the Children's Hospital Boston.

"The most common form of dementia among older people, Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder that affects your ability to carry out normal activities.”

“The Australia-Harvard Fellowship offers me the opportunity to establish closer links with key Alzheimer's disease researchers in Australia,”
said Dr Warfield, Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.

“Australia is recognised for its world-class research to identify and diagnose the disease before it progresses. New therapeutics may help delay the onset of Alzheimer's if it can be detected early enough."

"The Australia-Harvard Fellowship attracted a field of exceptional USA-based candidates," Mr Gary Morgan, the Chief Executive of the Australian e-Health Research Centre, says.

"Not only does Dr Warfield have very strong academic qualifications, he has already contributed to a number of advances in innovative 3D visualisation techniques used in planning for neurosurgical procedures. This experience makes him very worthy of the Australia-Harvard Fellowship."

Welcoming him to the ranks of awardees, Mr John Turner, Fellowship Secretary for the Harvard Club of Australia Foundation said Dr Warfield's project eminently reflected the Foundation's objective which is to support learned exchange between Harvard University and Australia. Some 17 fellowships for scientific collaboration have been awarded since the program began in 2004.

As a member of the Australian e-Health Research Centre's advisory committee, Dr Warfield will also attend the 14th Annual Meeting of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping to be held in June 2008 in Melbourne, Australia. Whilst in Melbourne, Dr Warfield will also present at a pediatric imaging satellite meeting.
