Prince William receives local view of global science

Reference: 10/03
CSIRO today will brief His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales KG on its contribution to international research into climate change, marine biodiversity, and fisheries.
20 January 2010

Prince William will tour the Marine National Facility’s research vessel, Southern Surveyor, in Sydney, where he will view robotic marine instruments that have revolutionised ocean observations and climate science and handle some of Australia’s unique marine biodiversity.

Prince William will view samples of coral, deep-sea fish, crustaceans, sea stars and more from the Australian Museum and CSIRO. Australia’s vast ocean territory is a marine biodiversity hot spot, with 40 per cent of creatures sampled during voyages of discovery new to science.

Prince William will view samples of coral, deep-sea fish, crustaceans, sea stars and more from the Australian Museum and CSIRO.

CSIRO scientists also will brief Prince William on Australia’s Northern Prawn Fishery, which is one of the first fisheries in the world to embrace operational efficiency and environmental sustainability in its day-to-day operations and which the United Nations identified as a global model of fair, flexible and accountable management.

Prince William will see how Australian marine observations using high-tech robotic vehicles – including those from Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS), The University of Sydney, The University of Western Australia and the Sydney Institute of Marine Science – play a vital role in understanding climate change, associated sea-level rise, and ocean acidification.

The Marine National Facility and IMOS are supported by the Australian Government.

Media Note: CSIRO scientists, including those participating in the tour of the ship with Prince William, are available for interview via CSIRO. Vision and images of the visit are also available. Contact Simon Torok: Mb: 0409 844 302; E: Simon.Torok@csiro.au
