CSIRO Robotics Lab Open Day – this Saturday!

Reference: 07/162

On Saturday the CSIRO Laboratories at Pullenvale will open their doors to the public for a day of exploration, fun and learning.

  • 23 August 2007

The public are invited to the Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies to see the very latest research and technologies in robotics, sensors and automation.

There will be a robotic helicopter, several large automated industrial vehicles that operate without human intervention, and Starbug, CSIRO’s robotic submarine.

“When people think of robots they think of Star Wars or automatic vacuum cleaners,” CSIRO scientist Dr Jonathan Roberts says.

”Our robots are different – they do real work in mines, under the sea, even in the air, but they do it without needing humans to tell them how to.”

Dr Roberts says that as well as robots, CSIRO is doing important work in the relatively new field of wireless sensor networks.

“Our robots are different – they do real work in mines, under the sea, even in the air, but they do it without needing humans to tell them how to.”

“These compact, low-cost sensors can monitor anything from the temperature in your kitchen to the level of water in a dam, and use this information to help manage our resources more sustainably,” Dr Roberts says.

Visitors will find out more about these exciting fields of discovery and meet the scientists making it happen.

There’ll be demonstrations and talks running all day, people to meet, and plenty of opportunities to explore careers in science and technology.

CSIRO Education will also be there with activities to challenge the mind and stimulate the senses.

When: Saturday, August 25, 10am to 4pm

Where: Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies, 1 Technology Court, Pullenvale, QLD 4069 (Limited parking available, or catch the 444 Moggill Bus from the city)
