DISEASE AND HEALTH BEYOND 2000
Heart disease, depression and traffic accidents are predicted to be the three major health threats to humans by the Year 2020, according to the World Health Organisation.
The WHO's Acting Director of Epidemiology and Burden of Disease Division, Dr Alan Lopez will speak on Thursday September 10 at the 12th annual Food Industry Conference - Nutrition in the New Millennium - in Adelaide.
Geneva-based Dr Lopez is in Adelaide to provide an international perspective on future shifts in disease and health to delegates at the three day conference, hosted by CSIRO Human Nutrition from September 9-11.
The conference, which has attracted leading scientists, academics and industry leaders in nutrition, offers a strong scientific national and global perspective on some of the most pressing public health and nutrition issues facing the world into the year 2000 and examines the implications for nutritional scientists, government and industry.
Dr Lopez is one of the world's leaders in collating and developing comparable data for global health research, from which predictions can be made about the causes of disease and death worldwide beyond the year 2000.
"Findings currently suggest that non-communicable diseases (including neuropsychiatric conditions) are already the leading causes of death worldwide, causing more than half (55%) of all deaths in 1990 compared with about 35% from communicable diseases, maternal and perinatal conditions and nutritional deficiencies," says Dr Lopez.
His projections of disease burden are based on a model which links cause-specific death rates to other influences on health status such as education and tobacco consumption.
Dr Lopez will speak at the Nutrition in the New Millennium Conference on Thursday 10 September.
