CSIRO SHOWCASES ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH
CSIRO, Australia's largest research agency, is in the business of providing environmental solutions, according to Dr John Radcliffe, CSIRO Deputy Chief Executive.
In a statement launching CSIRO's exhibit at ECOBIZ 98 in Adelaide, he says that CSIRO spends over $150 million a year on research to understand and protect Australia's unique environment and on applying this understanding in products and processes which enhance the sustainability of our key industrial sectors, and our society as a whole.
"Nearly half these funds come directly from our customers in industry and from federal, state and local government agencies.
"We are working with all these groups to identify key problems, particularly those which need the multidisciplinary teams CSIRO is well placed to pull together.
"Our presence at ECOBIZ is a way of demonstrating how this funding is being spent, and how extensive and important to Australia's future is CSIRO's environmental research" Dr Radcliffe says. One of Australia's most magnificent birds, the Great Palm Cockatoo with jet black wings and red tail feathers, is the centrepiece for CSIRO's stand at ECOBIZ 98 which opens in Adelaide tomorrow (22 October). This feathered representative of Australia's cultural uniqueness has wings labelled "environment" and "economy", symbolising the balance needed for a truly sustainable society.
ECOBIZ exhibits include
- live insect displays
- environmental monitoring equipment
- working models demonstrating environmental processes
CSIRO Publishing will be offering publications and products, including two popular CD-ROMs: EUCLID for identifying the eucalypts of South-East Australia; and Insects: Little Creatures in a Big World, featuring insects of Australia and three other continents. Free copies and subscriptions will be available for CSIRO's environment magazine ECOS. A wealth of hand-out material will be available.
