RIO TINTO AND CSIRO TO COLLABORATE ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Rio Tinto and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) have reached an agreement to identify areas of scientific research and development of mutual benefit to both organisations.

The agreement was signed by Mr Oscar Groeneveld, the Head of Technology for Rio Tinto, and Dr Colin Adam, Deputy Chief Executive of CSIRO at a national symposium "Technology - Australia's Future: New Technology for Traditional Industry" in Fremantle earlier today.

The agreement will bring a closer relationship on a number of research issues, and enable both parties to be more actively involved in each other's planning programmes.

Mr Groeneveld said that, "Rio Tinto has worked successfully with CSIRO on several research projects over several years. We are also involved with CSIRO in a number of Cooperative Research Centre projects and provide input to CSIRO's Mineral Exploration and Mining Sector Advisory Committee."

"This agreement enables us to pursue a range of research and development projects in various fields, including exploration, advanced systems, mineral processing and environmental technologies", he said.

Rio Tinto has, over the years, been involved in many successful research projects of its own, and there have also been a number of ventures in which it has worked with the CSIRO. In particular, this occurred in the development of the HIsmelt technology in the area of fundamental and applied research, a relationship which began in the early 1980s.

Dr Colin Adam said, "This agreement heralds a powerful new relationship between our organisations. It will establish links in important areas where CSIRO has a strong track record and talent for innovative research. It also includes a useful mechanism that enables projects to get up and running quickly."

"CSIRO has embarked upon a number of these collaborative arrangements. We have negotiated similar agreements with the Boeing Corporation and British Aerospace. Such partnerships allow us to greatly strengthen our relationship with industry and also give industry access to the full resources of CSIRO."
