RESEARCH TO PUT AUSTRALIA ON THE MAP

Going bushwalking this weekend? Trying to get the walking maps you need? Imagine being able to download them from the Internet on Friday night, just minutes before setting out.

This could soon be a reality when highly detailed information about Australia's land mass will be easier to access.

Better packaging and delivery of information for a wide range of planning, environmental and resource management decisions is the aim of a research alliance between CSIRO and Australian's major provider of mapping and land information, AUSLIG.

The two agencies today signed an agreement in Canberra to forge a two-year research and development alliance.

"AUSLIG has complete topographic map coverage of Australia and numerous miscellaneous maps. We have an enormous data bank of satellite images, geographic information, mapping data and so on. The challenge for us is how to make our information more accessible to our end users," says Mr Peter Holland, General Manager of AUSLIG.

"Government, industry and the general public will be able to easily see the variety of data available, select and download it online from their desktop. This will greatly increase productivity because instead of taking a few days, it could take a few minutes."

CSIRO will give AUSLIG advice on available and emerging technologies; plan prototype IT systems and provide expert teams to develop them; and identify processes to develop, support and maintain operational systems.

"CSIRO has a lot of expertise in IT systems, especially in the areas of making huge amounts of information more easily available and in electronic commerce. This expertise will be invaluable in helping us to make our information more accessible to our end users," Mr Holland said.

"It will be a great opportunity for CSIRO and a new challenge for our researchers," says Dr Murray Cameron, Deputy Chief of CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences.

"We look forward to working closely with AUSLIG over the next two years as
it builds Australia's status in the international land data community."

AUSLIG, the Australian Surveying and Land Information Group, is an agency of the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Science and Resources and Australia's major provider of geographic information, mapping and satellite imagery data, services and products to the community.

AUSLIG is regarded as a world leader in this area and represents Australia in many international forums. A strong R&D approach will help improve this position, influencing what is happening overseas and providing export opportunities for Australian technology.

CSIRO will provide AUSLIG with research services in IT systems through its
division of Mathematical and Information Sciences.
