$A5 MILLION INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS R&D PROGRAM AWARDED

Tadiran Microwave Networks has extended and expanded the scope of research and development being carried out by CSIRO Telecommunications & Industrial Physics, located in Sydney, Australia. This world class R&D could lead to the establishment of a significant millimetre-wave microwave industry.

A new range of radios is being developed entirely in Australia. The radios, used in backbone and customer access applications, will be marketed and sold worldwide through the global presence of Tadiran whose Microwave Networks division is based in Houston, Texas. Australia is responsible for the sales and support for the SE Asian region, China and NZ.

This latest program is part of an ongoing long-term strategic initiative first triggered by Australian Industry Participation in a contract to supply point-to-point microwave radios to Optus Communications. These radios provided the backbone of the Optus GSM network. The new program will provide the telecommunications industry with next generation radios that are more cost effective with better spectrum efficiency.

Recognising the significance of the work being done in Australia, Jim Gordon, President of Tadiran Microwave Networks Houston said, "The work being done is of global significance and we hope that this will lead to a new high tech industry being started in Australia."

Dr Alan Young, Project Manager for CSIRO, said "The working arrangement with Tadiran Microwave Networks was highly advantageous, with Tadiran employees located in the CSIRO Radiophysics Laboratory in Sydney, working alongside the researchers undertaking the R&D".

Dr Jim Harvey, Managing Director of Microwave Networks Australia agreed, "Through this tight interaction, much faster progress has been achieved compared to an arms length R&D contract. We have found this approach with immediate feedback has led to continual improvement in the design process".

The availability of highly skilled engineering talent which is in short supply in the US makes Australia a good place to conduct R&D. Tadiran also benefits from having a local core of dedicated people able to provide high level technical support for sales in the Asia Pacific region. The local presence, with its close working relationship with the engineering groups in the parent company, is able to support specific customer requirements for features and capabilities, for example in Network Management.

Tadiran Microwave Networks
Background

The Australian R&D subsidiary of Tadiran was incorporated five years ago to investigate the application of Gallium Arsenide Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs) to commercial digital microwave radios. Initial work was part of Australian Industry Participation in a contract to supply point-to-point microwave radios to Optus Communications. These radios provided the backbone of the Optus GSM network. Following initial success, the R&D has been expanded beyond it's original scope, and now covers a wider frequency range (18GHz through 40GHz) using more efficient modulation.

Tadiran Ltd. is Israel's largest electronics company, and one of the country's leading exporters. A subsidiary of Koors Industries, Tadiran is highly effective in telecom and defense communications, information technology and diverse electronic systems. Turnover in 1997/98 was $US1.1B. Approximately 80% of Tadiran's sales are from internally developed products, based on some of the most advanced technologies in the world. Research and Development is the company's principle source of new products.

Tadiran Microwave Networks designs, manufactures, installs and services long and short-haul, point-to-point microwave systems for cellular, PCS and private communications systems. With an extensive product portfolio from 2 to 38 GHz, TMN is able to provide quick response to customer needs and provide the best in telecommunications products and services. It has 9 worldwide locations with its headquarters and primary manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas. Customer care technical support facilities are also located in Atlanta, London, Manila, Beijing, Sydney and Melbourne. Tadiran Microwave Networks is committed to Total Quality Management and ISO9001.
