Welcome to the first edition of Preventative Health UPDATE, a quarterly bulletin aimed at keeping you informed of the progress of one of the largest scientific initiatives mounted in Australia.

The Preventative Health National Research Flagship is working with partners throughout Australia and around the globe to improve the health of Australians through a range of research projects.

Our goal is to help Australians live longer, healthier lives through prevention and early detection of common chronic diseases.

A partnership between the CSIRO and prominent clinical, research, industry and government organisations, the Preventative Health Flagship is one of six National Research Flagships which have brought together our best researchers to work on the opportunities and challenges that will bring the greatest benefits to Australia.

Our team of more than 100 scientists and technical staff is working to reduce the incidence and severity of chronic diseases by developing:

• new foods and diets which combat disease and promote well-being
• new ways to identify disease before it becomes serious
• new methods to use genes and proteins to predict and prevent ill-health
• powerful new tools to analyse the causes of disease and ill-health
• better ways to measure and monitor the nation’s health and key health issues, and
• better ways to help people manage their health issues.

This first edition of Preventative Health UPDATE highlights the work of several of our 20 projects.

Since the Flagship’s launch in 2003, our research programs have been focussing primarily on colorectal cancer (bowel cancer) and neurodegenerative disease, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, with some activity in cardiovascular disease and environment, specifically the effect of local atmospheric conditions on acute health risks.

We look forward to sharing the Flagship’s achievements with you through this newsletter.
